Astonbrook HA was established in September 2002, as a registered charity, with the sole purpose of providing accommodation for refugees and homeless households. The organisation has grown from a mere core staff of three volunteers, and one six-bed hostel, to over 50 full time staff and 350 units of accommodation.
In March 2003, Astonbrook HA expanded its services to Bristol. At the start of 2005, we opened an office in Easton, Bristol to manage the demand for accommodation in the South West. Although we are a young organisation we have shown our commitment, and quality of service, integrating a vulnerable group into the local community. In May 2005, we now have 150 units of which 43 units are supported accommodation. We are also currently working with the Emergency Temporary Accommodation Team, of Bristol City Council, to provide housing for the homeless.
In March 2004, the Birmingham Supporting People Team reviewed Astonbrook HA in line with ODPM requirements and achieved a Level C of the Quality Assessment Framework as developed by the Supporting People. The Birmingham Supporting People Team has also requested that we assist other organisations in the procedures of needs assessments and support plans. Apart from our supported temporary accommodation, we have arrangements with the Birmingham City Council Homeless Team for dispersal of homeless families from Bed & Breakfast Hotels to family houses.
We strive to improve areas in which the needs of our service users fall; if not already as part of our ongoing support. All aspects of an individual’s support plan therefore are reviewed with the service user on a regular basis to ensure we meet their changing needs.
Astonbrook HA are involved in developing community activities for its service users; such as celebrating Eid family days, 5 a-side football, and organising Open Day’s. It is envisaged that Astonbrook HA develops further provision of support that is user led with suggestions and input coming from our service users. We have now developed a newsletter, so staff, service users, and stakeholders, are aware and up-to-date of activities and issues.
